Laura is a solicitor in the Court of Protection department.

Laura has over twelve years’ experience of specialising in Court of Protection and Community Care law.

Experience & Areas of Expertise

She is an Accredited Legal Representative (ALR) under the Law Society Mental Capacity Accreditation Scheme and is regularly instructed by The Official Solicitor, as well as family members, RPPRs and Advocates, to represent vulnerable adults who are involved in Section 21A Deprivation of Liberty Mental Capacity Act 2005 proceedings, and also in more complex cases to determine the client’s capacity to make decisions regarding matters such as consent to sexual relations, marriage, contact with particular individuals, contraception, and foreign travel.

Laura also advises on issues relating to the Care Act 2014, eligibility for CHC funding, the operation of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) and other aspects of adult safeguarding, matters relating to the Human Rights Act 1998 and hybrid cases concerning health and welfare and property and affairs issues, and matters in the Court of Protection concerning the interface between the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Mental Health Act 1983.

In the 2020 edition of the Legal 500 Laura is described as “fantastic” and, along with colleague Melissa Law, as being “very good at going the extra mile to ensure the person they represent is given the best possible opportunity to participate in proceedings”.
