Court of Protection Paralegal

Edwards Duthie Shamash have an opportunity for a paralegal with an interest in human rights and a strong desire to represent and secure justice for vulnerable adults to join our highly sought after Court of Protection department, which is recommended in both Chambers and Partners and in the Legal 500.

This role may lead to a training contract at a later date depending on performance.

The Court of Protection can make decisions about the health and welfare, and the property and financial affairs of adults who lack mental capacity to make decisions for themselves.

We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly specialist team which provides advice, assistance and representation to vulnerable adults who may lack capacity to make certain decisions, predominantly in relation to their health and welfare and often in complex and high-profile cases. The team normally acts through a litigation friend, such as the Official Solicitor, an advocate or a Relevant Person’s Representative. We also represent family members, carers and other people interested in a vulnerable adult’s welfare.

Main duties & responsibilities

The role will fast-paced, varied and will involve supporting and assisting fee earners within the department with all aspects of case preparation including: drafting Legal Aid applications, drafting wide range of documents i.e. court orders and witness statements, legal research, processing evidence, preparing, collating and ordering documentation, attending on clients, attending case conferences and court hearings, dealing with new enquires, attending ongoing training to keep up to date with relevant legal developments, preparation of court bundles and other administrative tasks.

Training and close supervision would be provided by senior fee earners within team.

Skills & Experience

The right candidate will have excellent oral and written communication and inter-personal skills and the ability to empathise with vulnerable clients. In addition, they will be proactive, have strong organisational skills, and the ability to multi-task and effectively prioritise in order to meet time recording and billing targets. Good IT skills are also a requirement.

Successful completion of BVC/LPC/SQE and previous paralegal experience are not required but highly desirable.

Media Law Solicitor (Waterloo Office)

Edwards Duthie Shamash Solicitors, a Legal 500 firm, has an exciting opportunity for a solicitor to join its growing Media Team at our Waterloo office. A 3-5 years PQE solicitor with Media Law experience is considered ideal for this role but our focus is to find a candidate who is the right fit for the firm, team and clients. Therefore, less experienced solicitors may also be considered.

The role will cover working with the team on a wide range of matters including our ongoing work with a number of high-profile individuals in the phone hacking litigation as well as a number of other matters ranging from defamation, privacy and harassment.

The role will also cover our work within the political sector as we have served as the Labour Party’s external solicitors since 1990. We represent MPs and other politicians in defamation claims, judicial review and other civil disputes, and those facing standards tribunals for allegations of misconduct. Applicants must have experience of Media law and litigation.

Edwards Duthie Shamash Solicitors, a Legal 500 firm, has an exciting opportunity for a solicitor to join its growing Employment Team at our Waterloo office. A NQ-2 years PQE solicitor with employment experience is considered ideal for this role but our focus is to find a candidate who is the right fit for the firm, team and clients. Therefore, more experienced solicitors may also be considered.

The role will cover work with the team on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters and successful candidates must have experience of employment law including advice on settlement agreements, disciplinary and grievance matters and ability to manage employment tribunal cases.

Accredited Police Station Representative

Location: London

Edwards Duthie Shamash Solicitors, a legal 500 firm, has a vacancy for an Accredited Police Station Representative.  

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and enthusiastic individual to join our respected criminal department. Based at our Ilford/ Stratford office you will work closely with members of our experienced criminal law team to manage a varied caseload.

Main duties & responsibilities

Mental Health Solicitor

Our Community Law Team has expertise in all areas of social welfare law, including housing & debt, community care and mental health law.

We now wish to recruit a mental health lawyer to join our Community Law Team at our office in Stratford, London E15.

The successful candidate will have at least 3 years’ PQE and have attained their Law Society Mental Health Scheme accreditation.

They will also have advocacy experience, be a strong communicator with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients while working in an organised and flexible manner.

Housing Caseworker/Solicitor

Our Community Law Team has expertise in all areas of social welfare law, including housing & debt, community care and mental health.  The team has a particularly strong reputation for housing law and has brought a number of significant cases over the last 10-15 years.  The team is proud to hold Housing Possession Court Duty Scheme contracts with the Legal Aid Agency in the County Courts at Edmonton and Romford and at the Stratford Housing Centre.

We now wish to recruit experienced housing caseworkers or solicitors to join our Community Law Team at our office in Stratford, London E15. Successful applicants will have a sound knowledge of housing law and litigation and ideally will have experience of acting as a duty advisor under a Housing Possession Court Duty Scheme. Experience of community care law is also desirable.
