Colin regularly advises on disputes involving allegations of discrimination, harassment or victimisation in the workplace and is well placed to assist in securing or facilitating adjustments for those with disabilities.
Colin has extensive experience advising on concerns over equal pay, having been involved in mass litigation over equal pay disputes in Scotland. These concerned thousands of underpaid council workers which achieved favourable results and wide spread media attention. He has since advised a number of local and city workers on negotiating and litigating equal pay claims.
Having been involved in a number of litigated whistleblowing claims he is able to advise on the complexities related to making and dealing with protected disclosures in the workplace and more widely. This is particularly relevant in today’s climate where health and safety protections are paramount.
Colin has experience in conducting complex litigation at Tribunal and Appeal and has represented clients in Judicial Mediation. Where litigation can be avoided Colin has negotiated successful settlements and exit packages for clients from a variety of employment sectors. This includes at the senior executive level where he has advised on the construction and enforceability of restrictive covenants and reputational issues.
Colin is also well versed in advising on day to day matters such as: drafting and negotiating contracts, disputes over unpaid wages, flexible working arrangements, unfair dismissal, TUPE, as well as guiding clients through redundancy exercises and internal disciplinary and grievance procedures.
Colin has advised unions and their members on employment disputes including on issues of political sensitivity.

Prior to joining Edwards Duthie Shamash, Colin’s client work included:
- Securing positive judgement in case of disability discrimination where the individual was ill-health retired and faced career ending losses
- Securing a six-figure settlement for a senior executive, financial sector, in a case of equal pay and sex discrimination before the Employment Tribunal
- Securing positive judgment of constructive dismissal for a senior technician and negotiating a favourable settlement prior to remedy hearing
- Managing a case of territorial jurisdiction from initial proceedings to Court of Appeal
Colin qualified in Scotland specialised in employment law before moving to London where he worked at a city firm for more than 5 years prior to joining Edwards Duthie Shamash.
Colin has been involved in extensive pro-bono activities including providing advice to Law Clinics and in his work as executive committee member and trustee of the Discrimination Law Association. He is a member of the Society of Labour Lawyers and Unite the union.
